Nancy Lawalin
Painter
While growing up in South Georgia Nancy spent many happy hours with a metal watercolor paintbox. As a young child she became fascinated by work on display in the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.
Serious study of art began with drawing and art history taught by Ezra Sellars of Young Harris, Georgia. Nancy earned an AB degree in Art with concentrations in painting and ceramics from Valdosta State University. A summer in Italy with the University of Georgia Art Department allowed a deep dive into Renaissance Art and further study of painting and art history.
After a short stint working in public education Nancy spent many years teaching preschool children and raised two children of her own.
Most recently Nancy has experienced her own personal Renaissance after stumbling almost by accident into Hemlock Studio Gallery! She took a few classes to “get the rust off” and met Sara Oakley there who became her mentor.Nancy now paints in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and is available to teach private lessons.
“I enjoy painting in a loose style that seems to evoke memories of other times and places. My work has been described as playful, light-hearted and expressive. I have also been told that my paintings suggest a feeling of serenity.”
Nancy is a member of the Art Colony Georgia, a studio for a wondrous array of art nerds in a sheltering, nurturing, noncompetitive environment located in Gainesville, Georgia. Her work can be seen in Oakley Gallery in Gainesville, as well as here at Hemlock Studio Gallery.
